A. http://www.odysseynewsmagazine.net/
The Odyssey Online is an extremely interesting website in the fact that they use high resolution pictures in basically their entire website. All the different colors exemplify the rest of the website which in turn makes the stories more desirable to read.
B. http://ttonl.org/
This website is extremely similar to that of the TPP. I feel like the masthead of the website is something that is really effective in not only catching the reader's attention, but also keeping the website looking clean. As online editor of the TPP, I actually feel like this website is extremely similar to ours.
C. http://www.elestoque.org/
The thing I like most about this website is their focus on a specific color: purple. With defined portions of the website as always purple (such as the text of letters), it creates a uniform, but varied feeling to the website. I find this really interesting as it also goes with the font of the website, which just acts to make it more effective.
2.
A. The first story that caught my attention is one about teachers now using social media and are now more involved in using applications like Instagram, Twitter, Vine. I feel like this helps to make a connection between students and teachers by connecting what teachers do with students. Even if the teachers aren't necessarily familiar with this type of technology, becoming familiar creates a connection.
B. The second story that caught my attention was one about students taking stimulants to study better. This is an issue that not only exists within high school, but on the collegiate level as well. I've even had some friends that have used or considered taking things like ADHD medication to help them concentrate to get better grades.

Point of View - This website has a very clean, minimalist look to it. This online newspaper is completely different from all of the others because it isn't about things happening in a high school, but about world events which is really interesting. But I like the layout more than the content, and most of their photos look like they were taken from the internet.El Estoque - I like the simplicity of this online newspaper. It's very organized with drop-down menus and all the most recent stories on the home page. The color scheme is simple, and it looks really clean. There are a lot of photos and a ton of stories related to the school and local issues and events.
The A-Blast - This website looks a little less clean than some of the others but I like that about it. It looks really professional and makes the school look like a really close-knit community. It's pretty easy to navigate and has a lot of interesting photos and stories.
1) One of the stories that caught my eye in the Best of SNO was the story about students taking Adderall to get their schoolwork done. The story made some interesting points, some that I didn't really agree with.
2) Another was a story about a school's breathalyzing policyn to prevent alcohol use at school functions.

The Pride Online, Claudia Taylor Johnson High School, San
Antonio, TX;
This
website has a very user-friendly layout. The images that change on the main
screen are very visually stimulating, and the color scheme is also very
pleasant and proud of the school. The only drawback however is that there are
too many titles and that the titles are also too close together and not equally
spaced. The top bar also has good organization regarding a user’s requirements.
Lasso
Online, George
Mason High School, Falls Church, VA;
This
website’s layout is all white, which can be distracting to the user. The
website does however provide many opportunities for social media connections
between the user and the school. The pictures that the website chooses to
display are not great quality. The ads that the website chooses to run pertain
to students, such as “Modern Senior Portraits” or “Behind the Wheel Driving
Instruction”. Beyond that, the links towards other stories that are at the
bottom of the page are too cluttered and disinterests the reader.
This website has an ongoing color scheme of red and white
that even shows in the pictures that they display, which is creative and
well-tasted. Useful information regarding addresses and contact numbers are
portrayed on the top of the screen, which is critical to users. The categorization
of articles is useful and not too specific. Articles that this staff writes are
also very edgy, such as Judaism and feminism.
This website has a very dark color scheme and seems unlike
any other type of news source. It seems to advertise less than most other
websites, yet also seems less legitimate than other types of news websites due
to its types of stories (videogames and nothing going beyond school)

The headline layout for this site is really nice. I like how the images scroll through and give the readers an eye-catching picture. The colors of the site also mesh together really well.

I really like the layout of this site. It seems very organized and everything is well-placed.

The headline layout for this site is also very eye catching. I like the photos that are featured and then the following layout that spotlights their best stories.

One story that I found to be very interesting was the one about students taking stimulants to study better. It's very intriguing how people will turn to drugs for an edge in a field like academics.
A sad story was about a high school senior who was cut from her school's varsity basketball roster, after having played for three years on the junior varsity squad. She was supposed to finish on the varsity team as a senior, but her spot was taken by freshmen.

One of the two most touching stories was a story about homeless students at a local middle school. 31 of 798 students at the middle school are without a home. It is sad to see children in jeopardy. Several students state they have been homeless on and off. It is hard to see that a young child goes days with and without a home.
Another story which caught my attention was the story about teachers now appreciating social media and are now more involved. Teachers are now on Instagram, Twitter, Vine, and several other social media sites. When growing and living in and up and coming society even the older people want to fit in.

I like the post made by www.odysseynewsmagazine.net, C larke Central High School, the post by elestoque.org, Monta Vista High School, and vantage.thegjp.org, Pacific Ridge School. The post i like by Clarke Central High School is titled Out of the closet, onto the field by Louise Platter. I like the word choice and how the writer points out the ideas floating around football players today about the type of people they should be. Starting this post off with a video was brilliant and most definitely caught the attention of the audience. One thing that may be less noticeable to some is the structure of the paragraphs. There are not so many words in every paragraph that it is overwhelming but Platter gets his point across without being boring with few but well chosen words.
The post made by El elestogue about an electrical fire burning down a house had relevant pictures and a video. This post was well structured and well done much like various post by Global Vantage. Their website as a whole is well structured and contains a great vibe" it makes you feel like an artist has been there before. The websites of the aforementioned sites are organized and contain the same vibe at times even though it is consistent with Global Vantage. I prefer these sites over others of similar genres and styles because of the artistic feeling they give off much like beams to the sky.

Francis Howell High School has a really good website. The layout of the page really catches your eye, and since there are lots of pictures, it is very visually pleasing. They have really good pictures for all of their stories.
Southwest Shadow also has a very good website. I like the very plain look that they have on the masthead for the page. While the setup of the page is really cluttered, the overall flow of the page and the pictures is really nice.
The Foothill Dragon Press has a very layout for their main pictures at the top of the page. The red that they use is a really cool color. The page seems a little bland but the pictures at the top kind of make up for it.
2)
I really like the story about the senior that gets cut from the varsity basketball team to make room for other incoming players. I thought it was really interesting because you don't really see that happen very often: picking a couple of freshmen over a senior. It was sad, but it ended hopefully.
I also really like the under the knife story because it was very interesting to read about all the things that the people in the story had to go through.

Of all the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) online High School Digital Publication Crown Finalists and High School Hybrid Publication Crown Finalists I looked, the three I thought were best are the Knight Errant, the Campanile, and the Hoofprint.
I loved the Knight Errant from Benilde-St. Margaret’s School in St. Louis Park, Minnesota because the content was updated everyday and the stories were great. However, the main reason why I consider the Knight Errant one of the best online publications was because of its format. The website looks clean and professional but is still eye-catching; it is easy to navigate and find time-relevant stories in all categories; and it is easy to access through social media.
The Campanile from Palo Alto High School in Palo Alto, California is an exemplary newspaper because of the content of its stories. Though the format of website is only commendable and the stories have not been updated recently, the style of the stories are superb. Their stories range from world news updates to features stories on teachers with Twitters and all are well written.
Finally, my absolute favorite online publication was the Hoofprint from Walnut High School in Walnut, California. Visually this publication beats the competition to a pulp. The website looks amazing and is by far the most modern publication I viewed. In addition, it is really easy to navigate. The website is not updated as regularly as some of the others, but the content of the stories is good and it is updated enough that things on the home page aren't outdated.
When scrolling through stories on the Best of SNO website, the one story that caught my eye and captivated me was a story written by Mason Miller of Groom High School in Groom, Texas about his school potentially allowing teachers and faculty to carry concealed fire arms. I found this story extremely interesting because with the data he collected the topic seemed fairly reasonable and made think about the effect this could have on a school.
Another story that stood out to me was a story written by Zion Douglass of Catonsville High School in Catonsville, Maryland about Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) ratings. In this opinion piece, Douglass argues that when a movie tiptoes the line between a PG-13 and R rating, companies choose to give it a PG-13 rating because the limits placed on R-rated movies limit its success. This topic is something I feel strongly about and the points Douglass brings up are thought-evoking and well supported.

- jjnation.com The pictures are very bright and clear and the website itself is very eye catchy and interesting. I also like the tweets that pop up every second keeping track of news.
- Knight Errant newspaper- The layout of the website is easy to comprehend and not confusing. I like the separate tab dedicated to reviews. It really stands out the website. Also, the box stating "like us on Facebook" makes the website look very professional.
- .elestoque.org The articles are published on varying dates which shows that students are punctual and keeping up with all their assignments. The online posting of the issues can keep the readers involve in the school's activities and news. I like the opinion section because most of the high school students care about their opinions to be heard.
- "Go north for an education?" talks about students going to Canada for higher education which rises the major issue of dramatic increase in tuition for universities. The topic is essential because it allows for the students to know that high tuition is causing seniors to look for others alternatives.
- "Dangers of distracted drivers" article talks about driving and texting. It is important because as students are getting their license to drive, they somehow cannot get over their habbit of texting every minute which can be deadly. Students should know about the dangers.

1. el Estoque - The layout of the website is excellent, very modern and balanced with a mix of stories and pictures/videos. They have their paper publication and a section for videos right there on the front page. The stories are updated multiple times a week. Everything is well formatted.
2. HiLite - This website is designed professionally as well. There a many sections on the front page (so it's a little long), but it's easy to find the story you want. They have a section for social media and even a twitter feed, which is definitely something our own website should have. The stories are also updated multiple times a week, which is something we need to work on.
3. Tiger Times - The first thing I noticed when I went onto the website was the color scheme, which is made up of orange, black and white and is very attractive. I like how the font is bigger on this site as compared to others. Each story post has a picture besides it, even if it's just a small thumbnail, and this adds a lot of aesthetic appeal. If the stories were updated more frequently this would definitely be my favorite website.
1. Las Vegas student immerses himself in in K-pop culture
The title itself is eye-catching simply because of how unique the topic is. The story is not really a story but a profile with questions and quotes and no transitions, which works surprisingly well in this case.
2. Replace textbooks with tablets
This is a short opinion piece which has a title that tells you right off what the story is about and what the writer believes. I like the work because it's short and relevant, just the type of story to have on a website.

fhntoday.com- The layout of this website is very clean and organized. Instead of the stories listed down a row under the news tab, the stories are organized in a way that makes it more interesting but still very professional. They also frequently publish articles and even have their own TV station to show videos!
The Odyssey- I really like the drawings and photos for the stories on this website. The pictures are creative and provide an interesting way of looking at the story. Also once you click on a story, its like the site transforms and you are dominated by really powerful and interesting photos. The stories are also pretty hard hitting and would even be interesting to people who don't go to that school.
The A Blast- This is another online newspaper with a very organized layout. Everything is pretty simple but the masthead is unique so readers don't forget about it. I think the editorials on this website really stand out. A lot of the issues they cover are very relatable and deal with issues that are popular in the news right now.
Stories
1. http://bestofsno.com/1585/features/under-the-knife/
These is not just one story but a collection of story detailing the experiences and effects of having surgery as a high school student. I thought this was really interesting and soemthing that I have never seen before. It is in human nature for people to be fascinated and wonder what exactly happened when they see someone injured. This is a really big reason why I was so intrigued by these stories.
2. http://bestofsno.com/1604/sports/nongame/even-seniors-get-cut-from-the-team/
I really enjoyed this story because although it is about a high school basketball player, the underlying message of this story is relatable to everyone, not just basketball players. The message of the story is to never take anything for granted and if you work hard naturally good things will come your way which I think is an important lesson for people to learn. I also think it is clever how this story subtly hints at this life lesson without being obvious or obnoxious.

Online Newspapers:
1. The Tiger Times is the online newspaper of Texas High School in Texarkana. The photos that go along with the stories are interesting. Rarely do I see a mug shot or just a profile photo, but the picture conveys what the story is about. The layout of the website is also easy to the eyes and not cluttered.
2. The Rider is the online newspaper of Legacy High School in Mansfield, Texas. They have many feature photos under the sports section. Some of the headlined stories have unique photos with editing like blurring and monochromatic filters.
3. The Channels is the online newspaper for a Santa Barbara high school. The photos on the site just pull you in since the angle approach of the photos are different. Also the site's layout is very organized and easy to read.
Photos:

This photo was used for an article on school bullying. I really like how the photo was edited and made blurry and I like the inward focus towards the hallway. This blurry image makes it seem surreal.

I really like this photo since it was shot to direct our eyes to the phone. Also, the background is blurred to enhance the fact the story is about phones and the apps.

El Estoque - The site is organized in a way that is easy to navigate through. Within each section tab, there are subsections. For example, the sport sections is divided spring, fall, winter, sports, matador of the week, game reviews and game of the week. Also, I found the stories in the opinion section very interesting. The stories cover a wide range of topics (some unconventional). I especially liked the opinion piece titled "Tiger Mom’s claims are not so racist after all".
The Spoke - A couple of other online publications also had multimedia content. However, The Spoke embeds videos into their stories. Something unique about this online newspaper is its section, Folio is a separate publications made up of students that share a passion for art and writing. They publish a yearly publication of qualified works. The site shows some poems and photographs written/taken by students.
The Edge- It is a well-rounded online publication. It has a very neat layout, good stories, updated postings, photos etc. What made it stand out was its Interactive Stories created with Prezi.
Schools consider allowing trained faculty access to guns on campus - Last year in TPP we did a story on this since a legislation was recently passed that affects all schools in Texas. This piece discusses the pros and cons of allowing teachers to carry guns. It is really well researched. The writer interviewed authorities such as the superintendent of the Palmer Independent School District and a local sheriff.
Homelessness affects students, while school system offers support - I found this feature story very interesting because I never considered this topic as a story idea. It's pretty personal and hard-hitting for a features. However, it really does a good job of showing the reader what some students' lives are like.

As I perused the world of newspaper program websites, I noticed that all the greats had one simple thing in common: recency. In our fast-paced and ever-changing lives, we now want news quickly and concisely and are less concerned with the flowery delicacy and attention once given to stories. Because of the frequency of their postings and the relevancy of the news they cover, The Boiling Point | www.shalhevetboilingpoint.com, Shalhevet High School, Los Angeles, CA; The Edge | www.pgedgeonline.com, Pleasant Grove High School, Texarkana, TX; and FHNToday.com, Francis Howell High School, St. Charles, MO really stood out to me. The Boiling Point has a clean and easy to use website that would allow any reader to find the news they need. The stories seemed relevant to what is going on in their school and their community, while keeping original angles. FHNToday's layout was more interesting and made me want to look around and scroll through stories. I really liked their use of social media, too. But my favorite was The Edge. First, the layout is hip, clean, and cool, making me want to scroll through a recent basketball game's pictures and participate in their polls. The stories seemed really interesting and relevant to their school. But most of all, they literally posted everyday; they already had up an Oscar's review!
Out of the stories I read, I really liked Uncovering addiction and Under the Knife.

1. The Fourcast from the Hockaday School has a modern design and uses iconography and alternative copy very effectively. Their story about the 'hookup culture' shows all of these elements very well. The photo they took looks very professional, and the online format looks very similar to what TPP currently is.
2. The Rider is a good website just because it is filled with content. Not only are you able to access all of the information at the top bar, but all of the highlighted stories are listed right below as well. Each staff member as a picture-day like stock photo. I think the Daily Photo is a cool idea, as is the Daily Instagrams. Overall, the website is filled with content instead of a minimalistic approach.
3. The Lasso, although not the most modern in web design, is effective in its format because it puts breaking news right in the center of the page. Their twitter feed is updated, and they already have an Oscars review, which is quite impressive. The website also has links to a youtube channel and instagram.
1. I thought the homeschooling story (http://bestofsno.com/1396/features/for-these-students-school-continues-at-home/) was interesting because we have never covered this issue before. I have never heard of Bellaire students who only come part-time for the extracurriculars, and then pursue a route of homeschooling as well. I think that the specificity of this story is what really makes it unique and interesting.
2. The story on self-harm (http://bestofsno.com/1050/health/self-harm-is-damaging-but-treatable/) stood out to me because the language used by the interviewee was very raw and uncensored. She seemed very open and honest about her opinions on self-harm and why she did it, as well as defeating misconceptions about it. The article also had many outside facts woven into the story so that it shed light on not only the student, but on the issue as a whole. I think this is how all features stories should be- specificity in the interviewee, but a broader scope in the outside information.

My favorite three blogs of the list are The Hoofprint | www.whshoofprint.com, Southwestshadow.com, and Inklingsnews.com. I prefer these three in that order mainly because of the layout that pops up upon initially opening the online newspaper's site. The Hoofprint is my favorite because of the modern design which makes it look more interactive than many of the other websites. Highlighting the pictures for each story and having a scroll over to click option I found very appealing and very eye-catching. The Southwest Shadow online newspaper looked a lot like ours, but I like the easiness with which comments can be placed and stories can be discussed. My third and last favorite, The Inkling, I prefer because the graphic designs across the type are very well done.
The two stories that I chose from the Best of SNO are the Varsity cutting story and the teen love story. I chose the first because it's a topic I write about and hearing other opinions and reading other sports' writer's voices about sports is interesting to me. I chose the teen love story because I was intrigued to find out how a writer could take a sappy story like this and turn it into something that someone would actually want to read. Both have good photos to match the story and good interviews that relate very well to the topic of the story.

Favorite Online Newspapers:
1. The Tower Pulse- At first glance, I saw that the design was very eye catching in the aspect that everything was clean and easy to identify. New visitors will not be confused. As for the content, they are very quick to update news stories regarding trends and relevant topics. Another thing I like about The Tower Pulse is that the archives can be easily accessed. www.thetowerpulse.net/
2.The Boiling Point-This online newspaper is very similar to ours with the white background but the main difference is that their online postings are very consistent. almost everyday, there is a post. and there are even posts on the weekends about the Oscars. what i think TPP should imitate is that viewers are able to read the online version of the printed newspaper. I also think this online newspaper is very well organized with diverse topics http://www.shalhevetboilingpoint.com/category/arts/
3.Tiger Times-Similar to The Boiling Point, it uses word-press style but the main significance is that it looks more futuristic. The format and fonts makes the website seem more sophisticated as a whole. and again, the articles their are very recent and consistent. I like the poll question. It is very simple yet it is revelvant to a lot of students because many people buy girlscout cookies.
Favorite Articles:
1. "No Air" is an ideal news story that fits in an online newspaper. When something newsworthy happens, people are drawn to find out. It helps to draw viewers to the website where there is a chance of reoccuring visitors. Also, the hook is very good. http://www.tigertimesonline.com/top-stories/2014/01/30/no-air/
2. A Q&A is something we don't have which is why I like "Q&A with Chris Radomski". It is more personal than a features article and it is straight to the point. http://www.tigertimesonline.com/sports/2014/02/28/qa-with-chris-radomski/

FHNtoday—It’s
organized, has interesting stories, and everything is very easy to read (white
background with dark letters). I especially liked how in the majority of their
photos, the subjects are not looking at the camera (I think it makes the
pictures look more natural and sincere).
Inklings—I’d like to
start off by saying that I love this newspaper’s name. But of course, it also
appears to be a great site—it’s (also) very organized (although the sections go
down instead of sideways, so it is slightly less obvious to find, say,
features), the words are definitely legible (blue letters on a white background
are both clear and school-spirited), and stories appear to have to do with more
than just the school (for example, they have something about the Sochi Olympics)
The Red Ledger—A thick
black background of sorts lining the sides adds interest without darkening the
site too much. In addition, their red borders around the different categories help
to clarify the sections, while simultaneously adding to school spirit and pops
of color. Their organizations is similar to that of Inklings’ (stories go down
vs. shift horizontally), and their stories and titles appear interesting (they
have a story about Shrek).
Best of SNO:
I liked “Holey Moley:
Rogue Mole on the Loose” because it was well written, very informative, and was
able to address an issue that many people with such pets (and, apparently,
schools) have in an entertaining yet effective manner.
I also liked “Dangers
of Distracted Driving Dissected” because it was very well written; it managed
to address a serious issue in an engaging way. It included lots of interesting
facts to sufficiently get the point across, yet also did not tire or dry out
the topic. Plus, it picked something that pertains to all people—not just teenagers,
and especially not just teenagers at their school—and I thought that was cool.

1. My favorite online newspapers were The Foothill Dragon Press (of Foothill Technology High School in Ventura, CA), the Red Ledger (of Lovejoy High School in Lucas, TX) and the Southwest Shadow Column (of Southwest Career and Technical Academy in Las Vegas, NV). I enjoyed these newspapers because they were aesthetically pleasing to look at, with colorful articles and an interesting, easy to navigate format. The articles all had interesting titles that made me want to click, and they were grouped into categories like Opinion, Fashion, Columnists and Student Life. These stories had great voice and depth, and all of them were interesting to read. They included videos, Instagram posts and other cool features (such as weather reports and polls on current events). There was much opportunity for student/ newspaper interaction.
2. One article that stood out for me was the feature on the dangers of distracted driving. As a new driver, I can now personally relate to the risks and temptations of driving. Sometimes just looking at the road can make you distracted, much less using a cellphone. A few days ago, I almost got hit by a driver who ran a red light at a busy intersection. If I had been distracted and had stopped a second later, I would have been severely hit and injured along with my parents (who were also in the car with me).
Another article that I found intriguing was the article on the truth about group projects. I have found myself in several of the positions mentioned in the article, (ex. The Boss, the Worker, the Lazy one, etc.) It was an amusing and fun article to read.

Favorite Online:
1) FHNOnline is my favorite online newspaper of the winners. While most online papers have a color scheme, FHNOnline does really well keeping everything related to the scheme. It is also very clean and simple, where other sites have more features, but are also more cluttered. Also, I like the organization of the site, with visuals very prominent, taking almost a third of the website. Recent Galleries have just as much space as Latest Stories, and the latest update in each section is on display at the bottom.
2) The Rider Online is a close second. It is less clean because it has more extra features and effects, but the extra things contribute to the quality of the paper. I place it second to FHNOnline because it does not have a floating bar that links to each section which means I have to scroll to the top to find the sections. It also links to all of the paper's other accounts, like on Instagram, photos, and videos.
3) The Foothill Dragon Press is also one of my favorites. It takes advantage of the abilities of the internet more than the other papers, like the special effects in the story collage at the top of the front. It also links to things like the weather, videos, and photos that are relevant to the student body. The paper also has lots of subsections that clearly delineate where each story goes.
Feature stories:
1) "Tanning beds banned for teenagers under 18 in Illinois" is the feature story I found most intriguing. Given the "perfect physique" perpetrated by the media, tanning bed use has exploded. Legislation like this in Illinois may lead to similar laws elsewhere to protect kids from the possible dangers.
2) "“The Lego Movie” not missing any pieces" is the most fun feature story. It is a really in depth analysis of the film that for other may just be a fun day at the movies.

TRNWIRED (http://trnwired.org/)-This would be my favorite website because it's very interactive and user-friendly. The format is clean and simple, but it also has a lot of stories incorporated into the front page design. It also has tag links on the bottom which I think will appeal to students to follow trends.
The Hoof Print (http://whshoofprint.com/)-I like this website because its top image is extremely simple and straightforward. The stories are neatly placed next to each other in symmetrical columns. It also has a lot of videos and graphics.
The Sagamore-(http://thesagonline.com/)- This is my second favorite website not only because its headlines are funny and interesting, but its contents are very relatable to students. It also has polls on its front page and it is apparent that students do actually participate in them.
"Teen Couples In Love"- This story is adorable. Its content is extremely relevant to high school students and the quotes are very heartfelt. The concluding tips for relationships are also very sweet. The entire story is fun to read and rarely gets boring despite its considerable length.
"Even seniors get cut from the team"-This story is also relatable to high school athletes; unlike the previous, it reflects the negative sides of playing sports and even though some of the quotes show dissatisfaction, they are still realistic and informational.

The Circuit of
Cypress Bay High School looks quite professional. The masthead (pointing out
its award winning status) and sub-categories look like something USA Today or CNN would have, and I was quite impressed. Their link to the print
edition is something I think we should replicate. The Circuit also has a multimedia editor who posts plentiful
videos, which gave more insight into student life than a story would. It gave a
glimpse of day-to-day student life as it happened, which I think is important
for a student newspaper to give.
The Rider of
Legacy High School was definitely one of my favorites in terms of user
friendliness. I also liked their “Personalities” section that allowed readers
to attach faces to the names of staff writers and editors. It helped me connect
with that paper instantly, despite the fact that I do not go to Manvel. The Rider also separates the negative
and positive opinions. I found that a handy tool.
Silver Chips also
struck me by its user-friendliness. Its site map breaks down nearly every
category. The newspaper covers national and international issues, especially
politics. As someone who avidly reads political news, I absolutely loved that
feature of obtaining world news from a student perspective. It also had a
play-by-play coverage of the 2012 Election as it happened. The news stories
(and all others on the site) were well written, but I could honestly say the
same of all three.
“Uncovering Addiction”
by Kaitlyn Lemke and Jackie Gehling.
This story was hard-hitting, emotional, and realistic. With heroin use on the rise in America, coverage of how it affects students and the young, not just those with wealth or fame, could easily bring someone to tears.

Three best online newspapers:
1. The Feather Online - unique use of bilingual columns, creates greater audience diversity, blogger icons incorporated on website, daily news section with videos, tabs drop down with suggestions
2. The Harbinger Online - good use of consistent color scheme, multimedia section, paper newspaper incorporated online, online radio included
3. The Fourcast Online - weather forecast include, Twitter synced with website, good color scheme, user-friendly layout, brief description included with each "front page" preview photo
Best of SNO
1. I found the feature piece "Schools consider allowing trained faculty access to guns on campus" to be a very thought-provoking piece as it raises the question of the extent to which the second amendment has helped or harmed our society. Although many aspects have been carefully constructed and examined in the system established by for teachers' carrying of concealed weapons, I don't believe the system will be an effective permanent solution. Much reevaluation needs to be be done regarding the current gun culture.
2. I also found the opinion piece "Replace textbooks with tablets" to be interesting as it relates to our current PowerUp initiative. I agree that tablets can store multiple e-textbooks that may be relatively cheaper than their paper counterparts; however, I do not believe technology is the key solution to improving education. Rather than focusing on technology and mere materialistic improvements, to truly increase the quality of education, more investment in human resources, teacher training, and student empowerment should be made.

Favorite Online Newspapers:
1. The Harbinger Online - The website, with its big, bold. colorful fonts, gives the reader/visitor a very strong first impression. The stories are updated often; even yesterday, at least two were updated. The overall theme is very well balanced, and the website is very user-friendly, not overly complicated, and easy to navigate. Stories are very relevant and interesting, especially to students.
2. Point of View - The articles here are more opinionated and political. Some topics include bankruptcy, immigration reform, and executive decisions in the White House. The website gives a very technical and professional feel, and gives me a very intellectual impression of the student body. I find the polls to be very interesting because people actually go on it and vote; the opinions are varied which opens the floor to possible discussion.
3. The Tower Pulse - When I first clicked on the website, I immediately noticed the graphic change of the big picture headlines at the top of the page. I really like this site because the topics are highly, highly relevant to students as well as society. Just yesterday were the Oscars, and within a 24-hour period, there is already there is an article talking about the highlights of the night. The topics do not only cater to the movie culture, but other pop culture and trends as well, like Twitch Plays Pokemon.
Best of SNO:
1. "Ignore Dehydration Symptoms at Your Own Risk" - I am drawn particularly towards the headline; it is as if the article is challenging you to read it, and that's how I think headlines should be: compelling. Reading the article brings me into the point of view of someone who is actually undergoing dehydration, which is an important aspect of the story's impacts to the reader, especially because it highlights clear symptoms, which people may or may not recognize as the onset of something very serious.
2. "Self-harm is Damaging but Treatable" - This article focuses on a very sensitive topic that prevalent yet often avoided in society. Though cutting and self-harm can be viewed with a certain social stigma, the article takes a very direct approach to addressing the causes and effects of such a damaging action. Such strong writing can also enable sufferers to reach out and find help, as if they were to read the article, they would realize that they aren't the only ones going through such an ordeal and that there is a very possible way to help them out of their mentality.

Websites that stood out to me:
-The Tower Pulse (thetowerpulse.com): The Tower Pulse stood out to me because it was very clean. It was clear and visually easy to understand. The information was split up in accessible ways.
-The Kirkwood Call (thekirkwoodcall.com): This website has a good color scheme and a big picture at the top of the page of the school auditorium filled with kids.
-The Harbinger (smeharbinger.net): This website has a color that is nice on the eyes. THe action shots of sports games caught my eye when I looked at the page.
Stories that stood out to me:
"Breakdancing helps student come out of shell" by Clara Harrington and Maddie Kinnaman from Palo Alto High School was touching and it had a really good lead. It interesting me especially become I am a dancer and loved to hear this story about dance helping someone to become more confident in themselves.
"Uncovering Addiction" by Kaitlyn Lemke and Jackie Gehling immediately caught my attention because of the title. It automatically makes you curious. The story is well written and brings a lot of attention to teenage addiction which I feel is a big problem today in many schools.

I like the Foothill Dragon press website. The layout was very intriguing and made me want to see more.
The Boiling Point had very interesting articles. Many of them were about Jewish identity.
The Edge Online had a very organized format. It was simple but got the point across. There were also many intriguing articles.
The first story that stood out to me was about a girl who made her own homecoming dress. It was really cool to read about a girl who is around the same age as me. I’m interested in fashion so her story somewhat inspired me to design clothes.
The second story that stood out to me was about people who are addicted to heroin. This story was very deep and it was interesting to read about how students overcame their addiction and are now back on their feet.

The Foothill Dragon Press expresses its layout in a manner of organization and interest. The most interesting stories are at the top of the page, while the layout shows all of the papers distinct categories. The photos are a direct representation of what the story is about. The The Inklings news online website provides for easy access and format. The layout is interesting in the way where top headlines flash out at you. The Boiling Point creates an interesting format, not one of creativity but one of organization. This paper acts as a file for everything going on with its high school as well provides students opportunities and informations only found on the website.
The review on the Lego movie agreed with every opinion I created after watching the children's film. The story provides an inside look not only on a child's view of the movie but an adults as well. The interest of the hidden characters only adults would know of engraved a review of interest. The review on Flappy Bird takes the daring stance of the addictions to apps and the troubles it brings. This story does not tell of the success of Flappy Bird but what it is doing to the people who play. A very interesting angle and avery unusual outlook on this now famous game.

Looking at the list of online publications, one of my favorites would the the Palo Alto Campanile. I really like thier publication's webiste because of its simple and easy to navigate design. Any viewer can get a glimpse at whats stories have recently been published in each section, photos and their twitter feed all on the home page. I also really enjoyed how this website had a way to see their current publication. Several of the stories related to what was going on in the Palo Alto community- not just what was happeining in the school. I really like how they include what is happening around them instead of only school related stories, such as rennovations in the Palo Alto community or local elections. Another webiste that I liked was the Walnut High School Hoof Print. Their website is really eyecatching in that it is full of contrasting colors and cool effects. I really liked their sections such as "arts" which included school activites such as dance and choir and "scene" which featured reviews and more enteratinment centered stories. Many of their features were question and asnwers series along with short, quick to read stories such as a look back at fashion's history. Another online publication I liked is the Sagamore paper online. I really liked this website because it was simple, eyecatching and easy to navigate. I really liked how each section was seperated in subsections which made room for more stories. I also liked how they had stories about things such as the school cafeteria to an alumni's look back at the school's curriculum. This website made it really easy to find everything you need to know about the school from applying to the paper to just reading about what is going on in the school. All of these websites showed a glimpse at the students at each school and the entire community. On the best of Sno website the story "Homelessness affects students, while school systems offer support" by Hannah Conkin, John Sevier MS, Kingsport, Tenn. is very intriguing because of the controversial subject matter. This story easily could have been shot down by the school administration, but it was well written and encompassed the entire issue and how the school dealt with it. Another story that I found intriguing was "Uncovering addiction" by Kaitlyn Lemke and Jackie Gehling. This story featured multiple interviewees who had all dealt with the serious subject matter of addiction. A subject that is not easy to understand much less make understandable to the reader, was professionally written about by these high school newspaper students.

Blog #3: CSPA & Best of the SNO - James F.
These three sites stood out for me. Each of them have stories that show clear formatting (quote, transition, quote).
The Clarion (http://rbclarion.com/): This site was very clean, classic and simple, not overwhelming users with flashy widgets. Site navigation was relatively straightforward. The home page features an individual section for each section in the newspaper allowing one to easily browse for a story. They have individual pages for each writer, giving a short bio, a picture and links to all stories, photos or videos by that writer. This is very impressive.
The Feather Online (http://www.thefeather.com/): This site is also very simple but gets the job done. The frontpage features widgets for videos, blogs, podcasts, polls, comics and of course, stories and pictures.
The Foothill Dragon Press (http://foothilldragonpress.org/): This is by far the most impressive site. It looks like a real, professional website: something comparable to that of the newyorker.com. The design is so clear and clean-cut. There are impressive web features like preview on hover, and I loved the pictures and drawn visuals to accompany the stories.
These are two fantastic stories.
"Homelessness affects students, while school system offers support" by Hannah Conkin of John Sevier MS. This is just a really interesting and compelling story in which Conkin does a great job of articulating the topic. She is very thorough and obviously has done a lot of research with all the insights and information about the city's Homeless Education Program (HEP). It is a really interesting and moving story. It sort of makes me think how lucky I am to be able to live the way I do, and I am very impressed with that.
"Even seniors get cut from the team" by Darryl Littlejohn Jr. at Southfield HS. This is sort of a sad story, but I think Littlejohn does a good job of writing it with an upbeat tone. He has a optimistic tone for the basketball team and gets all sides of the story (the cut player, the teammates, the coach) which all wish the best for the team's future. I like the use of "literary devices", really just that he used a clever phrase "Attempting to fill Parker's Nikes are two new freshmen..."
