Blog #3
El Estoque - The site is organized in a way that is easy to navigate through. Within each section tab, there are subsections. For example, the sport sections is divided spring, fall, winter, sports, matador of the week, game reviews and game of the week. Also, I found the stories in the opinion section very interesting. The stories cover a wide range of topics (some unconventional). I especially liked the opinion piece titled "Tiger Mom’s claims are not so racist after all".
The Spoke - A couple of other online publications also had multimedia content. However, The Spoke embeds videos into their stories. Something unique about this online newspaper is its section, Folio is a separate publications made up of students that share a passion for art and writing. They publish a yearly publication of qualified works. The site shows some poems and photographs written/taken by students.
The Edge- It is a well-rounded online publication. It has a very neat layout, good stories, updated postings, photos etc. What made it stand out was its Interactive Stories created with Prezi.
Schools consider allowing trained faculty access to guns on campus - Last year in TPP we did a story on this since a legislation was recently passed that affects all schools in Texas. This piece discusses the pros and cons of allowing teachers to carry guns. It is really well researched. The writer interviewed authorities such as the superintendent of the Palmer Independent School District and a local sheriff.
Homelessness affects students, while school system offers support - I found this feature story very interesting because I never considered this topic as a story idea. It's pretty personal and hard-hitting for a features. However, it really does a good job of showing the reader what some students' lives are like.
